Breakfast is very much important to all so we are making different breakfast dishes in our houses. Normally we are making appam, idly, dosa and bread but I need some verity dish so I made different tasty upma today. Everybody knows about aval which is usually available in houses. Upma is the main breakfast dish in every house but we are making upma with rava or semolina powder normally. This recipe will be very helpful to everyone especially those who need variety breakfast dish. I am really happy to share this dish to everyone.
Aval Upma is one of the special and tasty south and north Indian breakfast dish which is made by aval and it is very healthy breakfast. It is very simple and easy recipe to make at home. In this article, I am showing that how to make aval upma very easily. I have followed variety method because I added fried banana pieces to this so that the taste will be entirely different. The main advantage of this food is that we need not to have any side dish with this food. It is spicy less breakfast so everyone can use it especially children. We can give this to children for lunch also because it is very healthy dish. If we add lime juice to this colour will not be change and also it will be very fresh. If we need yellow colour we can add turmeric powder to this and we can make it by different types of vegetables as per individual's preferences. It has mixed flavour of banana and coconut. Make this tasty dish and start a new day with this variety taste. 

Preparation Time - 10 minutes
Cooking Time - 10 minutes
Decoration - curry leaves and fried banana


Rice Flakes or Aval - 2 cups
Banana - 2
Chopped Green chilli - 1 teaspoon
Chopped Onion - 3 tab spoon
Chopped shallot - 1 tab spoon
Chopped Ginger - 1/2 teaspoon
Grated Coconut - 1 cup
Curry Leaves - 2 springs
Coconut Oil - 3 tab spoon
Lime Juice - 1/2 teaspoon
Mustard Seeds - 1 tab spoon
Salt - To taste
Water - As required to cooking.

  • Wash aval gently 3 times with water and drain water completely and keep it a bowl.
  • Remove the peel of banana and cut it as small pieces.
  • In a pan, heat 1 tab spoon coconut oil and add banana pieces and fry it as desired and keep it aside in a bowl.
  • In the same pan, heat 1 tab spoon coconut oil and splutter mustard seeds.
  • To this add chopped ginger,  chopped green chilli,  chopped onion, chopped shallots and curry leaves and saute it well for sometimes. 
  • Then add grated coconut to this and stir well. 
  • To this add aval, salt and lime juice and stir well for 2 minutes.
  • Then add fried banana to this and mix together and serve it.
  • To get yellow colour use a little turmeric powder while making this dish.
  • It would be good if you mix semolina powder with aval.

Red Cowpeas - 1 Cup
Onion - 1
Green Chilli - 1
Turmeric Powder - 1/2 teaspoon
Red Chilli Powder - 1/2 teaspoon
Black Pepper Powder - 1/2 teaspoon
Coconut Milk - 1/2 Cup
Coconut Oil - 1 teaspoon
Mustard Seeds - 1 teaspoon
Chopped Shallots - 1 teaspoon
Curry Leaves - 2 Sprigs
Salt - To Taste
Water - As required for cooking


Sock Red Cowpeas in Water overnight and wash it well next day.Peel the skin of Onion and wash well and chop it.Wash Green Chilli and slice it thin and lengthy.Take a pan and put Red Cowpeas, chopped Onion, sliced Green Chilli, some Curry Leaves, Salt and enough Water to cooking and cover it and cook well.Heat a small pan and heat Coconut Oil and splutter Mustard seeds in it.Then add chopped Shallots and Curry Leaves and fry well.Turn down the fire and add Turmeric Powder, Red Chilli Powder and Black Pepper Powder and saute well until remove raw smell.Add cooked Red Cowpeas into this and mix well.…
