BLACK CHICK PEAS (KADALA) CURRY

Black chick peas curry is very popular vegetarian dish and everyone knows about this dish. Black chick peas contain protein so it is very good to health if it use on daily basis. We will get both white and black chick peas on markets but black chick peas are mainly using to make different dishes. It is mainly cultivating in North India and its leaf also very useful to human body. In Kerala, black chick peas dishes are using as the side dish with breakfast.
It is one of the tasty Kerala traditional vegetarian dish and we can make it very easily at home. We have to sock black chick peas in water one overnight to cook very easily otherwise it will take more time to cook and taste also will change. It is medium spicy curry so everyone can use it including children. It is best combination with chapati, rice, putt and appam. It is usually served as side dish in breakfast, lunch and dinner. I have used roasted or fried paste of masala so the taste and flavour will be very nice and it will attract to everyone. Main flavour will be garam masala flavour and this flavour will give us the tendency to have food. It is completely natural and following traditional method. It is very popular and common dish in every house. We will get it from restaurants as the side dish of breakfast. It will be very special to vegetarians and we can use it on daily basis because it is very healthy dish.

Preparation Time - 15 minutes
Cooking Time - 30 minutes

Ingredients

Black chick peas - 1 cup
Turmeric Powder - 1/2 teaspoon
Coconut Pieces - 1/4 cup
Onion - 2
Chilli Powder - 1 tab spoon
Coriander Powder - 2 tab spoon
Grated Coconut -1/2 cup
Water - 2 1/2 cups
Curry leaves - 2 sprigs
Garam Masala - 1/2 teaspoon
Fennel Powder - 1/4 teaspoon
Mustard Seeds - 1 teaspoon
Coconut oil - 1 tab spoon
Chopped Shallot - 1 tab spoon
Salt - To taste

Method
  • In a bowl, put black chick peas and pour water and add a pinch of salt and sock it overnight.
  • Then wash it well and put in a pressure cooker and add coconut pieces, onion, curry leaves and pour water and cover the cooker with lid and cook it until 3 whistles.
  • In a pan, fry grated coconut until brown colour.
  • To this add turmeric powder, chilli powder, coriander powder and fennel powder and roast it well and leave it for cool.
  • Then make it paste by using grinder and add it to cooked black chick peas and mix well.
  • Add salt to this and cook it well under medium flame. 
  • Then add garam masala powder and mix well and turn off the fire and keep it aside.
  • In another pan, heat coconut oil and splutter mustard seeds.
  • To this add chopped shallot and curry leaves and roast it well.
  • Then add this to the curry and mix well and serve it.
Tips
  • It will have better taste if use cumin seeds powder and fenugreek powder instead of using fennel powder.

RED COWPEAS COCONUT MILK STIR FRY

Preparation Time - 10 Minutes Cooking Time - 25 Minutes Ingredients Red Cowpeas - 1 Cup Onion - 1 Green Chilli - 1 Turmeric Powder - 1/2 teaspoon Red Chilli Powder - 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper Powder - 1/2 teaspoon Coconut Milk - 1/2 Cup Coconut Oil - 1 teaspoon Mustard Seeds - 1 teaspoon Chopped Shallots - 1 teaspoon Curry Leaves - 2 Sprigs Salt - To Taste Water - As required for cooking Method Sock Red Cowpeas in Water overnight and wash it well next day. Peel the skin of Onion and wash well and chop it. Wash Green Chilli and slice it thin and lengthy. Take a pan and put Red Cowpeas, chopped Onion, sliced Green Chilli, some Curry Leaves, Salt and enough Water to cooking and cover it and cook well. Heat a small pan and heat Coconut Oil and splutter Mustard seeds in it. Then add chopped Shallots and Curry Leaves and fry well. Turn down the fire and add Turmeric Powder, Red Chilli Powder and Black Pepper Powder and saute well until remove raw smell. Add cook
