We can make a lot of variety dishes or curries by Colocasia at home. It is completely natural vegetable and usually available in houses. Fried dishes are our favourite snacks and its popularity is increasing day by day. Different types of fried items or snacks are available in shops and this area will be crowded always that is showing its demand. But we can make these items very easily by using simple methods.
In this recipe, I am showing a very good combination of fried colocasia and tomato sauce which is usually served as snack. It is very simple and easy to make at home. I haven't used any artificial colour or essence to make tomato sauce and fried colocasia so that it won't affect to health. Tomato sauce is very spicy less so that everyone will enjoy with this combination including children. It has a great mixed taste such as sweet, spicy sour and salt. We can use any types of fried items with this tomato sauce. We will get very special mixed taste of crispiness and sauce flavour while we having it together. Garlic and Cinnamon are the main flavours of tomato sauce.We can make fried colocasia without turmeric powder also. We can get it from some restaurants in Kerala but completely it is a homemade recipe.

Fried Colocasia

Preparation Time - 10 minutes
Cooking Time - 10 minutes


Colocasia - 1 cup
Turmeric powder - 1/4 teaspoon
Vegetable oil - 1 cup
Salt - to taste
Hot Water - 1 1/2 cup

  • Remove the peel of colocasia and wash it well and slice the colocasia lengthy and thin.
  • Sock it in hot salt water for 10 minutes
  • Drain the water completely and keep it in a bowl.
  • To this add turmeric powder and mix well and keep it aside.
  • In a pan, Heat oil and add colocasia pieces one by one and fry until crispy as desired.
  • Keep it in a serving bowl and serve with tomato sauce.
Tomato Sauce

Preparation Time - 10 minutes
Cooking Time - 15 minutes


Tomato - 4
Red Chilli powder - 1 teaspoon
Garlic - 2
Sugar - 3 teaspoon
Cinnamon Powder - 1 pinch
Shallot - 2
Pepper powder - 1/4 teaspoon
Vinegar - 1 1/2 teaspoon
Salt - To taste

  • Cut Tomato as small pieces and keep it aside in a bowl.
  • In a pot, add tomato pieces, garlic and shallot and cook it well without water and leave it for cool.
  • Then paste it well and strain the extract.
  • Heat a pan and add this paste, Red chilli powder, pepper powder, sugar and cinnamon and mix well.
  • Then add salt and vinegar and stir well under low flame until thick.
  • Turn off the fire and serve it with fried colocasia.
  • It will be better if you add a little turmeric powder and red chilli powder to fry colocasia.
  • It would be tastier if we cut colocasia very thin.
  • To keep it for a long term keeps it in a airtight container.

I can say that it is entirely different from other fish curries because its colour and method of preparation is completely different from others. It can make it by using any type of fishes. Better to make it with king fish but here I have used Mackerel fish because I couldn't get king fish. Usually we are making spicy red colour fish curry in houses and hotels. Keralites can't eat rice without fish curries or dishes because fishes are the main side dish of their daily day life. It will be available in some standard hotels and it has a royal effect. It will be a special and variety item to everyone. Its tasty is very nice and different from other fish curries. We need not to add chilli powder to make this and also we need to fry the fish before making this curry. Mainly it is preparing by Christians or in Christian houses.
