Pumpkin curry is very famous and special dish in Kerala which is made by Pumpkin. I think everyone knows about this vegetable because it contains a lot of health benefits so it became a part of daily day life. Pumpkin is the solution for so many diseases especially cancer and lungs diseases. It helps to remove nicotine from human body so it is useful to anyone who are smocking. We can make different tasty dishes by using this. Pumpkin payasam, pumpkin Erissery, sambar and aviyal are the common dishes of pumpkin. Today I made very simple and easy pumpkin curry.
I have made this curry so many times at my home and everyone enjoyed with this curry. Pumpkin is available at home or we will get it from market at cheapest price in any season. Keralites are usually preparing this curry at home on daily basis. This is very thick, tasty and spicy less curry so that everyone will like this curry very much including children. It is very good combination with rice and chapati. Pumpkin is very good to our whole body. I can recommend this recipe to those who are interested to learn cooking because it is very easy to make. The main flavours are cumin seeds and fenugreek powder. In this recipe, I have added green chilli and turmeric powder so the colour will be yellow and it will be looking very attractive. I know that everyone will enjoy with this curry. 

Preparation Time - 10 minutes
Cooking Time - 20 minutes
Decoration - fried shallot and curry leaves


Pumpkin - 1 cup
Grated Coconut - 1/2 cup
Turmeric Powder - 1/2 teaspoon
Onion - 2
Shallot - 3
Green chilli - 4
Cumin Seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
Water - 1 cup
Curry leaves - 2 sprigs
Salt - To taste
Mustard Seeds - 1 teaspoon
Coconut Oil - 2 tab spoon
Fenugreek powder- 1/4 teaspoon

  • Remove the peel of pumpkin and wash it well and cut it as small cubes and keep it in a pan.
  • To this add 3/4 cup water and salt and cook it half. 
  • Remove the peel of Onion and wash well and slice it lengthy.
  • Wash Green Chilli and cut it as small pieces.
  • Combine grated coconut, Turmeric powder, sliced onion, green chilli pieces, cumin seeds, curry leaves and 1/4 cup water in a grinder and make it paste.
  • Then add this paste into half cooked pumpkin and cook it under low flame.
  • Turn off the fire when it boils and keep it aside.
  • In a pan, heat coconut oil and splutter mustard seeds.
  • Then add chopped shallot and curry leaves and saute it well until fry it.
  • To this add fenugreek powder and mix well.
  • Then add it to cooked pumpkin and mix well and serve it with plain hot Rice.
  • To get more taste, creamy effect and good smell cook pumpkin in coconut milk instead of using water.
  • You can use only Shallots instead of using onion.

Red Cowpeas - 1 Cup
Onion - 1
Green Chilli - 1
Turmeric Powder - 1/2 teaspoon
Red Chilli Powder - 1/2 teaspoon
Black Pepper Powder - 1/2 teaspoon
Coconut Milk - 1/2 Cup
Coconut Oil - 1 teaspoon
Mustard Seeds - 1 teaspoon
Chopped Shallots - 1 teaspoon
Curry Leaves - 2 Sprigs
Salt - To Taste
Water - As required for cooking


Sock Red Cowpeas in Water overnight and wash it well next day.Peel the skin of Onion and wash well and chop it.Wash Green Chilli and slice it thin and lengthy.Take a pan and put Red Cowpeas, chopped Onion, sliced Green Chilli, some Curry Leaves, Salt and enough Water to cooking and cover it and cook well.Heat a small pan and heat Coconut Oil and splutter Mustard seeds in it.Then add chopped Shallots and Curry Leaves and fry well.Turn down the fire and add Turmeric Powder, Red Chilli Powder and Black Pepper Powder and saute well until remove raw smell.Add cooked Red Cowpeas into this and mix well.…
