Mashed Jackfruit is very famous, popular and traditional dish in Kerala. Mashed jack fruit can use as breakfast, evening special and for dinner. Some people are using this with chicken curry, beef curry, prawn masala and fish curries and some other are using it with different pickle, chutney and curd. But I would like to have it with any non-vegetarian curries so I made with this jackfruit dish. Beef is very tasty non vegetarian item and I used tomato paste to make this special beef curry. It is very spicy beef curry and it is an excellent combination with mashed jackfruit. I would like to have it as dinner because its taste will increase at that time. Mashed jackfruit is very tasty item and if we use it with spicy beef curry its taste will increase. To get spicier I used both dried red chilli and pepper powder. It is very thick curry and its main flavours are garam masala powder and fennel powder. It is a traditional combination and everyone can try this tasty combination.

Mashed Jackfruit

Preparation Time - 15 minutes
Cooking Time - 25 minutes

Raw Jackfruit Flesh - 30
Garlic - 3
Ginger - 1 piece
Onion - 3
Shallot - 5
Green Chilli - 5
Turmeric Powder - 3/4 teaspoon
Grated Coconut - 1 cup
Cumin Seeds - 1 teaspoon
Curry Leaves - 2 sprigs
Pepper Powder - 1/2 teaspoon
Coconut Oil - 1 tab spoon
Salt - To taste
Water - As Required

  • Clean raw jackfruit flesh well and remove the seeds from inside and cut it thin and lengthy.
  • Put it in a pot and add salt and water.
  • Cover the pot with lid and cook it half in steam. 
  • In a grinder, add garlic, ginger, chopped onion, chopped shallots, green chilli, turmeric​ powder, grated coconut, cumin seeds, pepper powder, curry leaves and salt and crush it together.
  • Add this coconut mixture into this half cooked jackfruit and cover the pot with lid again and cook it well in steam under low flame.
  • Mash it well by wooden ladle and pour coconut oil and mix well and put it in a serving bowl.
Tomato Beef Curry

Preparation Time - 15 minutes
Cooking Time - 30 minutes


Beef - 1 kg
Chopped Ginger - 1 teaspoon
Chopped Garlic - 1 teaspoon
Chopped Green Chilli - 1 teaspoon
Onion - 3
Tomato Paste - 4 tab spoon
Turmeric Powder - 3/4 teaspoon
Dried Red Chilli - 10
Raw Coriander Seeds - 1/2 cup
Grated Coconut - 1 cup
Pepper Powder - 1/2 teaspoon
Fennel Powder - 1/2 teaspoon
Garam Masala Powder - 3/4 teaspoon
Coconut Oil - 1 tab spoon
Mustard Seeds - 1 teaspoon
Curry Leaves - 2 Sprigs
Salt - To Taste
Water - As Required

  • Wash beef well and cut it as small pieces and keep it aside.
  • In a grinder, put chopped ginger, chopped garlic, chopped onion, green chilli and turmeric powder and pour little water and make it paste.
  • In a pressure cooker put beef pieces, masala paste and salt and pour water as required and cook it half.
  • Remove it from cooker and put it in a pan and keep it aside.
  • In another pan, put dried red chillies and raw coriander seeds and roast it well.
  • Then add grated coconut and roast it well.
  • Turn off the fire and add pepper powder and fennel powder and mix well.
  • Put it in a grinder and make it powder.
  • Add this powder into half cooked beef and add tomato paste and mix well.
  • Cover the pan with lid and cook it well.
  • Make it thick as you required and turn off the fire.
  • In a small pan, heat coconut oil and splutter mustard seeds.
  • Then add curry leaves and garam masala powder and stir well.
  • Add this into cooked beef and mix well and transfer it in a serving bowl and serve with mashed jackfruit.
  • You can cook beef in coconut milk to get more taste.

I can say that it is entirely different from other fish curries because its colour and method of preparation is completely different from others. It can make it by using any type of fishes. Better to make it with king fish but here I have used Mackerel fish because I couldn't get king fish. Usually we are making spicy red colour fish curry in houses and hotels. Keralites can't eat rice without fish curries or dishes because fishes are the main side dish of their daily day life. It will be available in some standard hotels and it has a royal effect.
